When the winter acorn stashes mysteriously vanish, it's up to an unforgettable duo to crack the case. Dukey, a sharp-minded Beagle with a homemade detective kit, and Dudley, a lovable, clumsy Basset Hound with a super-sniffer, follow the clues deep underground. There, they uncover a sinister plot by a ruthless rat named Ratticus, who is hoarding the food to build his own acorn-butter empire!
Why Kids Love It
- Hilarious Animal Antics
From Dudley almost swallowing a live fish to sneezing off Dukey's detective hat, the physical comedy is perfect for engaging reluctant readers.
- Epic Action
Hidden tunnels, falling net traps, and a massive rescue mission featuring a ragtag pack of neighborhood dogs.
- Cool Sleuthing
Kids love following along with Dukey's "officially unofficial" detective work, using his homemade coat-hanger magnifying glass and tracing strange claw prints.
Why Parents Love It
Beyond the exciting mystery, this is a story with a huge heart. It centers on deep, meaningful themes that parents love discussing with their children:
- The True Power of Teamwork
Dukey's brain, Dudley's nose, Brin's agility, and Cooper's massive strength prove that different strengths make the best teams.
- Doing the Right Thing
The book teaches that true heroes step up to help others simply because it is the right thing to do—not because they expect a reward.
- Forgiveness & Second Chances
Characters like Nibbsley the rat teach children the value of breaking away from bad influences and welcoming former outcasts when they want to make things right.
"This is Better than Dogman!"
After finishing the early chapters, I shared the story to get some feedback. My very first fan was the 8-year-old son of a co-worker. He absolutely fell in love with the mystery and the characters, excitedly announcing, "This is better than Dogman!"
That incredible reaction was all the motivation I needed to finish the adventure. Soon, I was sharing it with more kids and adults, all of whom loved the hilarious animal antics and the deep, positive messages embedded within the story.
Fun Facts: The Real-Life Inspiration Behind the Characters!

The Real Dudley
Dudley was my first and only childhood dog. In 1983, I came home from school to find this little puppy whimpering in our laundry room. He was the absolute cutest puppy I had ever seen—a little Basset Hound whose ears were so long he would actually trip over them! He had a bad habit of chewing on carpets, shoes, and toys, and once even jumped onto the dining table to eat half of a cake my mom baked! We were the best of friends until he passed away in 1995.

The Real Dukey
Dukey was an outside dog who lived next door. He had a dog house and was fed Italian food every single day! His only friend was Dudley. Dukey would often climb up and stand on top of his dog house just to stare into our backyard, especially when we were hosting BBQs and pool parties.

The Real Brin
Brin is based on a remarkable raccoon that lived in a field behind my grandparent's house in Hamilton, Ontario. She was like no other raccoon! Instead of hoarding food, she would scavenge for nuts, fruits, and scraps, and leave them at the base of trees for squirrels, chipmunks, and other woodland creatures to eat. Once, she even chased off a hunting coyote at night by screeching and scratching at it!

The Real Cooper
Cooper is my current dog! He is half Great Pyrenees and half American Boxer—a 70-pound lap dog who loves people and kids. In the book, I wrote him as wise and brave. In reality, he is terrified of thunderstorms and can usually be found shivering in the bathtub.
A quick note to pet parents: Five years ago, Cooper lost vision in one of his eyes due to a tick bite that I didn't catch in time. Ticks are abundant and dangerous, so always check your fur-best friends!

Nibbsley, Grubbs, Murk, and Twitch
The reformed rats were inspired by people in my life who unfortunately got involved with the wrong crowds. However, recognizing their situations, they found ways to get out, correct their wrongdoings, and are living happily today. They represent the power of second chances!

Ratticus & The Guardianship
Ratticus represents greed, bullies, and mean-spirited people. The Guardianship was created as the ultimate counterbalance—a symbol of law, order, and doing what is right in the animal world.
What's Next for Dukey & Dudley?
My plans for this series are on a massive scale! There are many parks, many adventures, and rich backstories currently in development. Book 2 will pick up right where The Great Acorn Heist left off.
It will dive deeper into the Guardianship as corruption stirs within, causing a level of chaos that will force our heroes to face their most dangerous and intense challenge yet!
